Episode 24 – Avoid Burnout By Making Time for Yourself

This week, I want to talk about the importance of taking time for yourself so you don’t burnout.

Burnout is a real thing. It’s a special kind of stress that can knock us off our game. It occurs when we feel constantly overwhelmed, drained and just unable to keep up with life's demands.

 

As stress continues, we slowly begin to lose interest or motivation that usually keeps us going.

 

It makes you feel like you just can’t give anymore and if you do, you’ll think ‘what’s the point?’ And because burnout can spill into every part of your life, it’s important to deal with stress right away before it gets to that point.

 

And one way to do that is by taking time for yourself. I know it’s easier said than done. Between work, family, friends, life(!); we can all make excuses on why we don’t have any time. 

 

That’s why taking time for yourself is something you need to be intentional about. You need to make yourself a priority. The work isn’t going anywhere. But your sanity can if you let it.

 

There are so many ways to make time for yourself and it’s all about finding what makes you happy, relaxed and what makes you feel accomplished in your personal life. 

 

Whether it’s working out, getting a massage, meeting with friends, listening to music, doing art - whatever, you’ll be so much happier when you make the time for it. 

 

And it’s more than just turning the TV on and fading out. In my opinion, it needs to be something you want to do. Something that makes you feel happy. 

 

Now TV can fit that description for you. I know I love watching SVU, but when I put TV on for the sake of being stressed and needing to turn my mind off, TV is just not going to cut it (at least not for me).

 

So first things first, I want you to make a list of all the things that make you happy or relaxed. It could also be working on the goals you have for yourself. Whatever it may be, write it all down.

 

And if you don’t know, call up a friend and see what they say! Maybe even take a walk and think about it. 

 

I know whenever I feel like I can’t think of anything, I take a walk with nostalgic music. When I lived in London during my study abroad, I listened to Coldplay and thought about where I was in life and where I wanted to go.

 

When I do this now, it takes me back and allows me to be in that space again.

 

Again, you need to find what works for you. Challenge yourself to come up with at least 10 things.

 

Once you have a list of all the things that make you happy, relaxed or that you’d like to do for yourself, I want you to think of when you are going to do them. And then take it a step further and physically block it off in your calendar. 

 

It could be something small like walking outside when on a work call, or taking 30 minutes to get a work out in, scheduling a facial/massage. I know it will seem annoying but when you are done, you’ll feel 100x better and glad you did it.

 

And make this a priority! You can even add a reminder to your calendar in 2-3 months that says, schedule time for yourself. Again, whatever works for you. 

 

Sometimes we don’t know we’re checked out and stressed until we check back in so if you want to be less stressed, be more intentional with your time and make yourself a priority now. If not now, then when?
